5:59+ Cafe & Bistro is a panda-themed western dining concept from Chengdu, and they’ve opened their first international outlet at 313@Somerset!
Beyond its adorable panda theme, the bistro stands out for its creative fusion of Sichuan flavours with classic Western dishes.
5:59+ Cafe & Bistro Menu
There is a wide array of western appetisers, mains, desserts and drinks, all infused with Sichuan flavours.
Their must-trys are the Panda Specialties, including the Kongfu Panda Wellington ($59), Panda Mist Jasmine Milk Tea ($9.80), and Old Chengdu Jasmine Beancurd ($9.80).
They also have unique dishes like Mala Beef Tongue ($26) along with items like Margherita Pizza ($27) and Beef Bolognese Pasta ($26).
Appetisers
For appetisers, we had the Seared Tuna & Avocado With Spicy Wasabi Dressing ($24).
The wasabi dressing wasn’t spicy at all and the avocado paired well with the tuna! It was a refreshing and appetising start to our meal.
Mains
The Sichuan Pepper Steak ($39) was tender with a good meaty bite.
Don’t be scared by the bright red chilli topping! The dish itself wasn’t too spicy, though the peppercorn gave a prominent numbing effect.
The Mala Hot Pot Pizza ($27) was our favourite main dish. It had a nice soft crust and they were generous with the cheese and the toppings.
We really liked the addition of konjac, which added a nice, chewy texture.
The Carbonara ($25) was alright, but we felt that it was lacking a punch or more prominent Sichuan flavour beyond the green pepper topping.
Drinks & Desserts
No meal is complete without a drink and dessert!
For desserts, we had the Tiramisu ($12), Panda Mousse ($14), and Sichuan Pepper Ice Cream (Single scoop – $6)
The Sichuan Pepper Ice Cream was surprisingly addictive because it leans more sweet than spicy, and is a must-try.
It started off smooth and creamy, before the tingling sensation hits your tongue.
Those who like cream-based desserts will enjoy the Panda Mousse ($14) and the Tiramisu ($12).
The Panda Mousse is entirely made of cream, while the Tiramisu has notes of coffee or liquor. Between the two, we’d recommend the Tiramisu.
For drinks, we had the Old Chengdu Mala Coffee ($9.80) and Bamboo Milk Tea ($9.80).
The Mala Coffee came with mala foam and a whole Sichuan chilli pepper, together with a panda marshmallow.
It was a combination that was surprisingly harmonious and left a lasting impression on us, in a good way.
The Bamboo Milk Tea didn’t have a particularly prominent bamboo flavour but was a refreshing drink and complemented the meal well!
Panda-Themed Western Food In Somerset
Overall, we really enjoyed the unique fusion flavours and cute aesthetics. The flavour combinations aren’t common and the panda-themed creations are adorable, so it’s definitely worth a visit!
