Suwon is a popular day trip location out of Seoul – something like JB to Singaporeans – with plenty of good eats in the city! Wonjo Mom (원조엄마네) is one of those eateries, made popular with their menu of beef intestine stirfry or gopchang bokkeum (곱창볶음).
Packed With Locals During Lunch
There’s a famous fried chicken street in Suwon, with names like Jinmi Chicken that you’ve probably heard more about. But on our visit there we decided to be adventurous and opt for gopchang – beef intestines!
The restaurant that popped up was Wonjo Mom (원조엄마네). It was a 20-minute walk away from the Hwaseong Haeggung Palace.
At first glance, it seemed like an unpretentious eatery in a foodcourt-looking building along a roadside.
Even though there were other stalls, only theirs was packed with locals. We were the only foreigners there!
Wonjo Mom Menu
They only specialise in one dish: gopchang bokkeum (곱창 볶음) or spicy beef intestine stirfry. The menu is in Korean but you can easily translate it with Papago!
You can get it with just the intestines (소곱창볶음, 16,000 won/serving) or together with sundae (순대철판볶음, 13,000 won/serving).
There are 3 levels of spiciness to choose from: Mild (순한맛), Regular (부통맛) or Spicy (매운맛). We got the Regular and think it was just right!
They also offer meats like boiled pork (돼지수육, from 15,000won) and Hanwoo Head Meat (한우소머리수육, from 30,000 won).
Beef Gopchang Bokkeum (소곱창볶음)
We got two servings of the Beef Gopchang Bokkeum (소곱창볶음).
The meal came with a simple assortment of banchan – radish kimchi, watery cabbage kimchi and a sauce with green peppers and ssamjjang.
The stirfry came within minutes, pre-assembled on a metal tray. It was piled with vegetables, glass noodles, ramen and rice cake all immersed in a red sauce.
You just need to let it boil for about 10 minutes and mix occasionally with the provided spatula. It tends to stick so you need to scrape a little!
The portion of the intestines was generous. There was a mix of big and small intestines, which looked appetising after boiling in the sauce.
It smelled good and tasted just as good as it looked! The intestines had no funk or gaminess, leaving only an enjoyable chewiness and fattiness.
The sauce was spicy, savoury and addictive, absorbed by the intestines. We couldn’t stop eating; especially the noodles!
But the best part had to be the fried rice (볶음밥, 2,000won) at the end. They cook it with the leftover sauce and ingredients, leaving it to cook and crisp on the bottom.
This was delicious. The crispy rice soaked up the sauce, complete with the saltiness from the seaweed to create a perfect finish to the meal.
