For Gongcha Korea, what started as an April Fools joke ended up becoming a permanent menu item.
Korea does take April Fools quite seriously and while the resulting products do sound ridiculous, a lot of them make it to the shelves after huge demand from the public.
Some examples include the Green Onion Cereal, which we posted an article about previously, alongside items like the Strawberry Bibimmyeon by Paldo, launched in Spring 2024.
This year, Gongcha Korea launched a teaser showing their pearls cooked with tteokbokki sauce on March 29, and everyone thought that it was an April Fools Joke. However, on April 1st, Gongcha announced that consumers in Korea would get to enjoy the Pearl-bokki because it’s being launched as a special event.
That’s not the end. According to NewsOne, the menu received so much popularity that 100,000 sets were sold in 10 days. As a result, Gongcha Korea will add this to its official menu.
Don’t worry, the tteokbokki pearls aren’t added directly to your drink. Instead, they come as a separate topping perched on top and can be purchased together with a drink.
Original and Mala Flavoured Pearl-bokki
They come in two flavours, the original tteokbokki, and mala flavour, priced at 2,300won and 2,500won respectively. The price seems reasonable for a small snack with your bubble tea as well!
We can only imagine the spicy notes of the pearl-bokki complementing well with the sweet notes of the milk tea. However, the next time we’re in Korea, we’ll be sure to try this for ourselves and come back for a review!
