Weilong Spicy Konjac Snack Review: It’s Like Mala In A Sachet

Feels not long ago that Singapore dived right into the Suan La Fen (Sour and Spicy Vermicelli) craze. Well, today we won’t be talking about Suan La Fen, instead, we’ll be reviewing the Weilong Spicy Snack, a konjac based snack from China.

Spoiler: It’s like mala in a packet.

Weilong Spicy Konjac Snack

Green Red and Orange packagings for the Weilong Spicy Konjac Snack to differentiate spice levels

This popular snack has over 330 thousand reviews on Tmall, with an average rating of 4.9 stars out of 5!

At first glance, one might think that the snack is made using squid or octopus. But in fact, the snack is made using konjac flour.

They are individually packaged for convenient consumption, so you can bring it anywhere you want. Each sachet is only around 26kcal, which is pretty decent for a snack.

It is also 100% vegetarian and vegan-friendly. The snack comes in three different flavours: Mala, Fragrant Spicy and Sour & Spicy.

Mala Flavour

The mala flavoured snack comes in orange packaging. Once opened, there is a nice whiff of Mala fragrance, not too strong but enough to make you want to devour it instantly.

Among the three, the mala flavoured one is the least spicy but has quite a significant numbing effect.

The texture of the snack resembled those chewy konjac jellies they put in bubble teas, but this one was slightly “crispier”.

Fragrant Spicy Flavour

The next one is the Fragrant Spicy flavoured Konjac snack which came in red coloured packaging.

To be honest, it smelled and tasted similar to the previous one. The only difference was its spice level, slightly up a notch from the mala flavoured one.

Sour and Spicy Flavour

Our favourite from the lot is the sour and spicy flavoured one. Packaged in a bright green colour, we mistook this as the one that was the least spicy.

We were wrong. Turns out, the Sour & Spicy flavoured snack was the spiciest among the three and had a nice tinge of sourness to it, almost like having a bowl of comforting Suan La Fen.

Yunnan pickled peppers were used for the seasoning, which contributed to the sour and spicy flavour.

Convenient Mala Snack To Bring Around

These spicy konjac snacks from Weilong will be a great addition to anyone’s pantry, especially if you’re a lover of all things spicy.

The individual cuts along the snack make it easier for them to absorb the seasoning, which is probably why they all pack a punch. If you’re someone who loves spice/suan la fen, we highly recommend the Sour and Spicy flavoured one.

Packaging-wise, we have no complains as the individual packaging makes it more hygienic in terms of consumption, and it easily opens without any struggle. It’s also a perfect size for you to bring anywhere, in your pocket or in your handbag.

With it being only 26kcal a packet, we can see ourselves snacking on this on days we crave for mala but want to diet at the same time.

Try it out for yourselves! The Weilong Spicy Konjac Snack is available for purchase on Shopee here.

The date on the packaging is the manufacturing date, and the snack has a shelf life of 6 months.

For new Shopee users, you can get $7 off a minimum spend of $15 with the code ‘SHOPEEXMDC’ until 30th April 2021.
