Puzzle Coffee: Melbourne-Based Cafe In ION Orchard Serving Coffee In Edible Cups

The highly anticipated Puzzle Coffee from Melbourne has landed in Singapore! The outlet in ION Orchard is the cafe’s first international venture, with a focus on sustainability.

Sustainable And Aesthetic Wooden Interior

Puzzle Coffee has put sustainability at the forefront of its brand, right down to its storefront design. It’s located right in front of  Exit 9 of the Orchard Thomson East Coast Line with a recognisable dark wooden entryway.

There is seating available in the back, decorated with pale wood furniture. We learned that all the wood used in the store is 100% recycled!

Puzzle Coffee Menu

There are options for both coffee and non-coffee drinkers on the menu. Coffee options include a Black ($5 for Regular) and the unique Magic ($6 for Regular) that’s a secret off-menu item in Melbourne, which is a double ristretto topped with steamed milk.

Non-coffee drinkers can indulge in the Biscoff Latte ($6.50 for Regular), Matcha/Hojicha Latte ($6 Regular) or Chai Latte ($6 for Regular). Puzzle Coffee’s signature edible cup is available only for hot drinks at a $3 top-up

There are also pastries available from the Bakery Artisan Original, including the Kaya Croissant ($5) and Pear Crumble Danish ($5).

White

Instead of getting the White ($6 for Regular) in the usual cup, we decided to opt for the edible cup. You get a choice of Single Origin or Puzzle Coffee’s Signature Blend, which is a mixture of beans from Columbia, Peru and Brazil. With an aromatic flavour, this medium-bodied coffee went down smoothly with notes of macadamia nuts and milk chocolate.

The edible cup is made with a mixture of grains and is fully compostable. It was quite tough when we first bit into it and was relatively tasteless, with the closest flavour resembling Weetabix. We think it will probably taste better when softened with the aromatics of the coffee!

Dirty Matcha

Those who fancy a more complex flavour can try their Dirty Matcha ($7 for Regular). The bitterness and fragrance from the matcha complimented the espresso very well, mellowed out by the milk.

Purple Sweet Potato Latte

One of the non-coffee options available at Puzzle Coffee is the Purple Sweet Potato Latte ($6.50 for Regular), a Singapore exclusive! The pastel purple drink comes topped with foam and a dusting of dehydrated purple sweet potato.

The latte came without additional sweetener, which allowed the flavour of the sweet potato to be pronounced and enjoyable. We got it iced, but it might be even more concentrated if you have it hot.

Black Sesame Latte

The Black Sesame Latte ($6 for Regular) was reminiscent of a tang yuan filling and would be perfect for those who like black sesame. Once again, this drink wasn’t overly sweetened and would make for a nice post-lunch dessert drink.

Pastries

We got to try the Kaya Croissant ($5), which had a fluffy interior encasing a fragrant kaya filling. There are also mini croissants like the Mini Almond Croissant ($2.80) and Mini Pain Au Choc ($2.80) which made for a good coffee pairing.
