After its first outlet in Ion Orchard, Puzzle Coffee is now opening a flagship store in Dempsey. Unlike the one at Ion Orchard which primarily serves coffee and pastries, their flagship store will have an all-day menu that’s perfect for lunch, brunch or even a quick pit stop for dessert.
Puzzle Coffee from Melbourne Opens Flagship Store in Dempsey
Housed in an iconic black and white bungalow, the space here retains much of the previous interior from Terra Madre. The biggest difference is the number of seats here, with indoor and alfresco seating available. Here, Puzzle Coffee can house up to 3x of their usual crowd at ION Orchard.
What To Expect from Puzzle Coffee Dempsey
We got a sneak peek of what the cafe has to offer when doors officially open to the public on Sep 30th. Here are some items we tried from Puzzle Coffee’s Menu at Dempsey.
We started with a Chia Seed Pudding ($17) made with chia seeds soaked with almond milk & chai tea leaves. The chewy pudding is topped with dragonfruit sorbet, coconut flakes and fresh fruits – a healthier brunch option!
Sandwiches are a classic in Melbourne’s café scene, so it’s no surprise that the Reuben Toastie ($20) is on their all-day menu. The huge sandwich features beef brisket sandwiched together with sauerkraut, gruyere cheese and Dijon mustard.
A great brunch option perfect for sharing is their signature Buttermilk Pancakes ($25). The pancake dough is made in-house, and there’s a layer of berry compote between each pancake stack. It’s topped with fresh fruits, lemon curd, cheesecake mousse and whipped cream. We felt it needed more sauce to achieve that perfect experience for each bite.
One of our favourite dishes was the Prawn Linguine ($30), while it was slightly on the oilier side, we appreciated the flavours created using a medley of capers, chilli, dill and cherry tomatoes.
A dish that made an impression was their Chilli Scrambled Eggs ($26). True to its name, the perfectly scrambled egg was topped with lots of chilli peppers & jalapenos and served on top of sourdough toast with a layer of homemade chilli jam. Be warned, we did find this to be quite spicy!
We did not expect to see the Thai Mango Salad ($24), which was quite well-received on our table. The dish is inspired by the classic ‘Som Tam’, using house-made cold pickled green mango, bean sprouts, chopped mint and coriander.
Our favourite items from Puzzle Coffee Dempsey were the desserts! The Matcha Lava Cake ($22) ticked all the boxes – a gooey matcha lava centre, along with a nicely baked cake. The addition of a chocolate crumble added a nice layer of texture to the overall dish.
There was a Brown Sugar Boba Cake ($21) which featured an airy Hojicha chiffon cake topped with cream and a side of warm brown sugar boba pearls. We found the pearls to be undercooked, having a tough texture, but the hojicha chiffon cake was delicious.
Last but not least, we tried the Cold-Drip Tiramisu ($21) which sees layers of ladyfingers soaked in espresso, Kahlua and Marsala wine. There was a nice balance of flavours, and overall, a satisfying tiramisu.
A Taste of Melbourne’s Coffee Culture
While you’re here, make sure to order a cuppa (or two). We tried the Melbourne Magic ($6), which uses less milk and a double ristretto shot. We also tried the Dirty Matcha ($7), which was our personal favourite. It had pronounced notes of matcha, while still allowing the espresso flavours to shine.
To celebrate its opening, Puzzle Coffee at Dempsey Hill will offer a one-for-one for all coffee and iced drinks from 30 Sep – 13 Oct 2024, along with a 10% discount for all food items during the same period.
