Inamjang (이남장): Seolleongtang Restaurant Established in 1977, Broth Takes 48 Hours To Make

Located in Euljiro-3-ga, a neighbourhood with a mix of old buildings and modern offices is Inamjang. This restaurant opened back in 1977, offering nearly 50 years of that same traditional taste of Seolleongtang.

You can find Inamjang in other parts of Seoul as well, but this outlet in Euljiro-3-ga is their very first branch. While this makes Inamjang sort of like a chain, locals coin it as a non-chain-like chain restaurant.

Fun fact: this is also one of singer Sung Si Kyung’s favourite restaurants.

Inamjang Exterior

Inamjang opens at 9:30am, and I thought it’d be nice to try the place while avoiding the crowd. While I expected an empty restaurant at 9:30am, the restaurant has already attracted a few customers, looking to get their hearty breakfast fix.

On the menu are a couple of dishes, such as the classic Ox Bone Soup (12,000won), Beef Trip and Intestine Soup (13,000won), Ox Foot Soup (27,000won) and Ox Knee Soup (27,000won).

They also have a small menu of dishes for sharing, such as the Suyuk, also known as Boiled Beef (55,000won to 60,000won) and Assorted Boiled Meat Slices (75,000won).

Quick note, this restaurant requires each person to order at least one food item.

Inamjang Euljiro-3-ga Review

Even before I placed my order, they served up a plate of cabbage and radish kimchi. The radish kimchi here is served whole, so you have to cut it on your own. There was also a whole bowl of sliced green onions, which can be added to your soup later on.

I ordered the Seolleongtang, but specifically the special version, which cost me 20,000won.

Honestly, I was quite shocked at the amount of meat in my bowl of Seolleongtang. It felt like they added a whole piece of steak to this.

Hidden below were even more pieces of meat, along with some rice and noodles.

I highly recommend trying the soup without adding anything first. After that, you’re free to season it to your liking with salt, pepper or even chilli flakes. The only thing I added to my bowl was green onions.

The white milky broth is made from boiling ox bones for 48 hours, which resulted in a deep, intense flavour that honestly required no seasoning on my end.

While the huge slab of meat did feel like it would be tough to chew, it was nothing like that. Throughout the whole bowl of Seolleongtang, there were lots of tender pieces of meat, some balanced with fat, some without.
