AMI Patisserie: Popular European-Japanese Pastry Cafe In Scotts Road

Tucked away into a corner of Scotts Road is AMI Patisserie, a quiet but stylish pastry cafe helmed by Chef Makoto Arami. The brand officially opened its first physical store after a successful launch as an online business, presenting the same menu of elevated pastries.

Interior Inspired By Kyoto

The cafe space takes design inspiration from traditional wooden townhouses – Kyo Machiya (京町家) – from Kyoto, decorated with light wood furnishing and neutral colours.

The front area sits 12 people but there’s a private Tsudoi Dining Room that can sit 8 people. The dining room is a space for Chef Makoto’s special Chef’s Table Discovery Menu (more on that later)!

AMI Patisserie Menu

A unique offering is the Chef’s Table Discovery Menu ($118++), a 6-course pastry-led menu personally prepared by Chef Makoto. Some items you can look forward to include Japanese Uni Brioche, a savoury Choux with egg and Japanese caviar and Ichigo Milk with Japanese strawberries.

The menu presents European pastries and desserts made with fresh Japanese seasonal produce in sweet and savoury variations. Options include the Seasonal Strawberry Parfait ($35), Croissant ($5.80) and Apple Tatin Early Grey Choux ($13).

There’s also an extensive drinks menu. They have an AMI House Blend in a Latte ($9.80) or Cappuccino ($9.80); or you can enjoy teas like Tokyo Breakfast ($12) and Yuzu Temple ($12). They even offer alcoholic beverages ranging from red wine to sake to whiskey!

Burrata Cheese & Parma Ham Croissant

Sitting atop of their housemade croissant is Burrata Cheese & Parma Ham Croissant ($14). This tasted as good as it looked! The creamy cheese paired perfectly with the saltiness of the ham, complemented by the flaky and buttery pastry.

Ham & Cheese Croissant

The Ham & Cheese Croissant ($8.40) looked deciveingly plain on the outside, but hid a picturesque center. We enjoyed the combination of smokey and salty, with the croissant being a good carrier for the fillings.

Seasonal Vegetable Tarte

We tried the Awajishima Onion Tarte ($15, 8cm) garnished with Italian autumn black truffle. Awajishima onions are famous for being ultra sweet and tender; which came through in the tarte! Each bite was full of umami from the mushroom filling and crunchy onions, making for an enjoyable flavour profile.

Almond Pain Perdu

An elevated take on the humble french toast, the Almond Pain Perdu ($18.50) was served with cognac ice cream and a caramel orange sauce. It had a great crunchy, caramalised sugary crust that encased an almost custardy center – really good with the cognac ice cream!

Musk Melon Parfait

The Musk Melon Parfait ($38) was almost too pretty to eat, served in an elegant glass with gold foil. It had a base of mint jelly and vanilla ganache.

The melon was fragrant and sweet, with that specialty Japanese melon flavour. We think it could use something crunchy for a textural contrast!

Kuri Mont Blanc

Our most memorable dessert was the Kuri Mont Blanc ($20) made with Japanese chestnuts. The dessert was creamy yet not too sweet and an enjoyable fragrance of chestnuts; perfect with a cup of tea or coffee.

We also liked the slight crunch that came from the almond dacquoise base, finished with the slight smokiness of Nikka whiskey ice cream.

Uji Matcha Kinako Choux

If you’re a fan of choux pastry, you’ll love the Uji Matcha Kinako Choux ($11). The pastry itself is made with Hokkaido cake flour to provide a better texture and hold up the generous amount of filling.

Inside is a luxurious combination of Uji matcha custard cream and kinako (soybean powder) cream, creating a very decadent experience.
