Hotel Indigo Singapore Katong Celebrates SG60 with Immersive Peranakan-Inspired Experiences

SG60 is just around the corner, and we’re seeing many uniquely Singaporean cultural experiences available to do. Hotel Indigo Singapore Katong is offering one such experience – a Peranakan-themed stay!

Peranakan-Themed Staycation

The Peranakan Escape Room Package (from $355/night, including a room) includes the following activities:

This experience is in collaboration with Peranakan Mansion, a living museum in Joo Chiat (more on that later)

King Standard Heritage View With Bath

King Standard Heritage View With Bath

The check-in was seamless and fast, with the front desk staff being friendly and welcoming.

I got to stay in the King Standard Heritage View With Bath. It was decorated with colourful furnishings: a mural of familiar Singaporean breakfast scenes and Peranakan-inspired ceiling decor.

This was also reflected in details such as the pillowcases and the complimentary amenities. There were jars of childhood Lemon candies and Kopitiam-style mugs for your drinks!

Other goodies included TWG tea and Bacha coffee, plus a capsule machine.

The bathroom space was just as nice, presenting a sprawling view of the Joo Chiat area. Something fun I noticed was the dragon engravings on the side of the tub.

Breakfast At Baba Chews

I had a comfortable sleep and woke up for the included breakfast the next morning at Baba Chews.

It’s a semi-buffet breakfast where you order mains (eggs, French toast and the sort) at your table.

They have a small salad bar and toast section, plus a laksa and porridge station!

I opted for an egg white omelette with chicken sausages. This was simple but filling and set me up for the fun day of activities ahead.

Singapore Peranakan Mansion Museum Experience

The package includes a session at the Singapore Peranakan Mansion Museum, about 15 15-minute walk away from the hotel.

Visitors can visit the museum at any time during their stay. No prior booking is required! Just present your confirmation card before your session.

This museum is dedicated to telling stories of Peranakan culture through interactive activities. The floor was packed with real, vintage Peranakan furniture and decor open for visitors to touch and feel.

Guided Tour

I got a guided tour by Elaine, one of the co-founders of the museum. She explained in detail the history behind Peranakan practices, ranging from special celebrations to daily life.

I learnt so much about the culture beyond the school textbooks, and it was incredibly insightful!

Something fun I learned was how kebaya tops are made with no buttons. This was to make it easier to pass it through generations!

Everything could be adjusted to accommodate different body types using brooches and pins.

Peranakan Dress-Up Photoshoot

The most exciting part was the photoshoot! I got to pick a full Peranakan kebaya, complete with bangles and ornate brooches. Do note it doesn’t include makeup, hair do, or photographer.

Ladies are advised to bring innerwear for the Kebaya. For men, only Batik shirts are provided, so we recommend wearing dark pants.

Every corner of the museum is perfect for pictures, so you’re sure to get a good shot.

Peranakan Kueh Set For Two

The experience ended with a leisurely Peranakan tea time. It came with a pot of Chinese tea and classic kueh like kueh salat and ondeh ondeh, served in colourful Peranakan cutlery.

This was a pleasant, sweet finish to the whole package!
