SF8: Korea’s Version Of Black Mirror Isn’t Like Your Typical Korean Drama

SF8 is unlike your typical Korean dramas.

No romantic stories of a North Korean soldier using a scented candle to find you amidst a crowd and you probably won’t find your husband cheating on you from the first episode.

So if you prefer dramas with themes such as artificial intelligence, virtual reality, robot and disaster, this may just interest you.

A Star-Studded Cast

Screened recently at the 24th Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival, SF8 features 8 stand-alone episodes (or short films), with a diverse cast for each episode.

It’s unlike your usual K-drama where you see the same cast across 16 episodes.

8 Different Episodes

The Prayer

In ‘The Prayer’, Lee Yoo-Young plays the role of an artificial intelligence robot that eventually faces a dilemma. The episode also features actress Yum Hye-Ran, who captured the hearts of audiences through her performances in ‘When The Camellia Blooms’ and ‘Mystic Pop-Up Bar’.

Manxin

In this short-film, Manxin is an AI fortune telling service that has incredible popularity amongst the public. Interestingly, Manxin directly translates to a female shaman in Korean.

Joan’s Galaxy

Love Virtually

Look forward to Super Junior’s Choi Siwon and UEE’s chemistry in ‘Love Virtually’ as they seek to find love through a virtual dating app.

Empty Body

Empty Body takes place in a future where a connection between the human brain and an AI is possible. A mother utilizes this technology to try and bring back her dead son.

A Distant Reality

With episodes touching on issues that might become a reality in the future, SF8 is bound to leave you thinking after each episode. What do you think of this new K-drama format?
