An Illustration of The Complete Journey to Recovery from Covid-19

With the recent coronavirus situation, it is no surprise to us that there have been instances of panic, where we saw Singaporeans sweeping off toilet papers at supermarkets. Despite the constant increase in cases, we have also seen an increase in people getting discharged from the hospitals. As of 13th Feb 2020, 9 pm – we’ve read that there are 7 people in the ICU instead of the 8 people.

These people are at war.

This is How the Body Fights Back

The coronavirus can enter the body through the droplets of an infected person, or through the mucosal membranes in our nose, eyes or mouth.

The virus duplicates in our body and we won’t feel anything during this period, also known as the incubation period.

Once the virus duplicates to an adequate amount, it attacks the body, and this is when the immune system is alerted.

White blood cells, monocytes and other various cells from the immune system start to launch an all-out attack on the virus.

If it was a typical virus, the attack would have been enough. However, as the coronavirus has a special protein, it causes a lapse in the immune system causing them to attack several of the body’s own cells as well. Sometimes, the body may even cause a cytokine storm.

However, with professional medical care, it is possible to recover from Covid-2019.

Other immune cells such as B cells and T cells join in the fight to kill off the virus.

This is why you need a strong immune system – to fight off viral infections.

If the above explanation is too complicated for you, you’re in luck.

Have you heard of an anime known as ‘Cells at Work’? It uses characters to represent different cells in the human body system. It’s a great way to get children interested in science as well.

An illustration by People’s Daily from China carefully explains the entire process through characters on what the body goes through to get rid of Covid-2019.
