There’s A Kimchi Energy Drink in Korea with Actual Kimchi Extract, Only 200,000 Cans Available

We all know Kimchi is one of Korea’s most representative foods and an important part of their culture. The traditional process of making kimchi, also known as Gimjang, is also listed as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. One will probably associate it as a banchan or common ingredient in Korean food but as an energy drink? It’s probably a first.

Packaged in a metal can with a huge image of kimchi, the energy drink contains strong carbonic acid, kimchi concentrate, guarana extract, 1,000mg of taurine, 70mg of caffeine, vitamin C and red ginseng concentrate which helps with fatigue recovery.

Despite the huge kimchi branding, the Kimchi Energy Drink contains only 0.001% of kimchi concentrate and the taste is said to be something along the lines of Strawberry Champagne.

It’s also a limited-edition beverage, with 200,000 cans available for sale. For each can of Kimchi Energy sold, the company will also donate 7 won to the Korea Dokdo Association.

This summer, they will also be releasing 2 new versions of the kimchi energy drink – Dongchimi Energy and Baek Kimchi Energy.

In case you didn’t know, Dongchimi is a type of Korean Kimchi made using radish. It’s typically clear in colour and really refreshing.

Baekkimchi, on the other hand, is made using cabbage and is commonly known as the non-spicy version of kimchi. It’s similar to the usual kimchi, made without any chilli pepper, which is why it’s white in colour. It’s commonly served with Bossam.

The Dongchimi Energy drink will be pear flavoured, while the Baekkimchi Energy drink will be apple flavoured.

While the combination might sound pretty appalling to some, reviews of the drink are pretty positive. What do you think?
