One of the hottest and rising stars in Korea right now is Choi Joon. The Korean comedian has been making appearances in various variety shows and radio shows, due to a viral Youtube video.
His Real Name is Not Choi Joon
The 34-year-old comedian goes by the name of Kim Hae Jun, who debuted in 2018 on the show Comedy Big League. Kim Hae Jun’s parents wanted him to be a policeman but he chose to pursue theatre and film to achieve his dream of becoming a comedian.
To date, he is still actively doing gag corners on Comedy Big League.
Thanks to his rising popularity, he has made appearances on various variety shows such as How Do You Play, Yoo Quiz on The Block and Radio Star. Popular K-pop Star Jimin from BTS also did an impersonation of Choi Joon on Yoo Quiz.
Roleplay Video on Online Dating
What shot Choi Joon to fame was a YouTube video uploaded on Psick University’s channel.
It was a video based on online dating apps, where the comedian took up the character Choi Joon, a cafe owner and did an online dating roleplay with the viewer.
Despite his cheesy lines, the character was well received by Koreans and kept people coming back for more. Take a look at some of the comments left on the videos:
With his series of online dating videos, it got him the nickname of Korea’s Online Boyfriend.
He Actually Sings Very Well
There’s another corner on the channel where Choi Joon partners with some of the best singers in Korea and joins them in a duet.
It’s called ‘Your Song My Song’ and has currently seen singers such as Jukjae, Paul Kim, AKMU’s Suhyun and 10CM. While the character Choi Joon often goes off-key and provides viewers with laughter, comedian Kim Hae Jun sings pretty well!
Recently, he appeared on the show Masked Singer to show off his singing abilities.
Made History on Maxim Magazine Korea
For the first time since the magazine’s inception, the male cover of the Maxim Korea Magazine has sold more copies than the female cover.
Despite Maxim’s dominant male readership, the Apr 2021 print featuring Choi Joon sold more copies than the print with Miss Maxim Kim Na Jung.
Korea’s Hottest Comedian
