Seongsu is undoubtedly one of the hottest areas in Seoul, with hidden hipster cafes, restaurants, and stores. One popular cafe in the hipster neighbourhood would be Seoul Angmusae (서울앵무새), easily identified by its bright coloured wall.
Must-Visit Cafe in Seongsu
You can easily spot Seoul Angmusae thanks to its brightly coloured wall, which is also a popular photo spot on social media.
The cafe usually attracts long queues for their popular cinnamon rolls and kouign amanns, but when we visited on a weekday afternoon, there wasn’t a queue thankfully. While there wasn’t a queue, most of the seats were already occupied, so we decided to sit outdoors despite the cold.
On the first floor, you can take your pick from the wide variety of desserts and drinks. There was also a corner dedicated to goods such as stationery, cups and phone cases.
One thing to note is that you’re only able to collect your desserts from level 1, and drinks must be collected separately in the basement. Slightly inconvenient, but o well.
Menu at Seoul Angmusae Seongsu
We were pretty shocked by the variety of Kouign Amann and Cinnamon Rolls here. A quick scan through the display and we managed to spot items like:
- Kouign Amann Ang Butter (4,000won)
- Kouign Amann Rum Raisin (4,000won)
- Chilly Pizza Cinnamon Roll (5,500won)
- Basil Onion Cinnamon Roll (5,500won)
Apart from the Kouign Amann and Cinnamon Rolls, there were also cakes like Pistachio Roll Cake (6,500won), Mint Chocolate Roll (6,200won) & Black Tea Pudding (4,500won).
They also have an extensive drink menu, from canned cold brews to vegan coffee milk options. Non-coffee drinks are also available with items like Malt Milk Tea, Dijon Strawberry Black Tea & more!
Matcha Mochi Kouign Amann
We were definitely spoilt for choice when it came to their Kouign Amanns. However, after much deliberation, we opted for the Matcha Mochi Kouign Amann. Half of it was dipped in green tea white chocolate, with the center of the kouign amann filled with matcha cream and mochi.
The texture of the Kouign Amann was extremely crispy, which might quite difficult to eat using a knife and fork. It did get quite messy since the pastry was so crispy, resulting the flakes flying around.
We loved the chewy mochi in the middle, which was a nice contrast from the crispy textures, and the matcha flavour had a nice balance of bitterness and sweetness.
Vanilla Cream Cold Brew
To wash everything down, we went for their Vanilla Cream Cold Brew (6,500won). The vanilla cream is served separately, while the cold brew was served in a can. The vanilla cream went well with the slightly bitter cold brew which had hints of hazelnut and Irish cream, helping to add a pinch of sweetness and fragrance.
Cafes in Seongsu, Seoul
While there are many cafes in Seongsu, Seoul Angmusae makes a nice spot for those wanting to experience the trendy neighbourhood. You can take lots of photos here while enjoying your coffee break, before or after visiting nearby attractions like Seoul Forest.
