When it comes to cereals in Korea, the first thing that comes to mind would probably be the Oreo Os cereal range. With flavours such as red velvet and peanut butter, the Oreo Os cereal range is well received all around the world. But a green onion/scallion flavoured cereal? That’s a first.

Kellogg’s is a household cereal brand and can be commonly seen on the shelves here in Singapore as well. You would probably recognize them by their signature cornflake boxes with a green coloured chicken and Special K range of cereals. Their cornflakes are also frequently used to make honey cornflakes. Some other well-known cereals included Froot Loops and Frosties.

Kellogg’s also has a cereal named Coco Chex, which are crunchy, chocolatey corn pillows. However, it is not as easily found in supermarkets as compared to Frosties or Froot Loops. The one seen here in Singapore is has a Monkey mascot printed on the packaging.

The Korean version of this cereal is also similar, however, with a different mascot – the cereal itself.

The story for this cereal is a long one, 16 years to be exact.

Back in 2004, Kellogg’s Korea launched a ‘President Election Event’ to promote the chocolate Chex cereal. There were two candidates, the chocolate Chex cereal character ‘Cheki’ went against another Chex cereal character, ‘Chaka’.

The two had two different slogans for their “presidential campaign”. Cheki’s was to

Cheki’s slogan was to make the cereal have a deeper and smoother milk chocolate taste while Chaka’s slogan was to put green onion into the cereal.

For a period of 1 month, members of the public could vote who gets to be the President of the Chex Choco World.

The votes for Chaka were higher and everyone thought Chaka would win. However,  the organisers said that there were some abnormalities to Chaka’s votes. Most of Chaka’s votes were removed, and eventually, Cheki won the presidential campaign and became the President of the Chex Choco World.

However, comments came flooding in regarding the green onion cereal, saying that this was not a fair election and how they wanted the green onion cereal to be released.

16 Years Later

Kellogg’s recently revealed a 6 seconds teaser video of the Green Onion Cereal, with the slogan ‘The Flavour That You’ve Been Waiting for 16 Years Is Here’.

They are currently looking for 50 tasters for the newly released cereals.

The cereal is said to be equally tasty when eaten with milk or by itself, as a snack. We’re super curious and can’t wait to get our hands on this. If we manage to get our hands on this, we’ll be sure to do a review for everyone.

One box of Kellogg’s Green Onion Chex Cereal is retailing for 5,980 won.
