Is a Private Charter in Khao Yai Worth the Money?

Field of Sunflowers in Khao Yai

Khao Yai is an up and rising tourist destination amongst many. It is only a 3-hour ride from Bangkok and is perfect for anyone looking to escape the hustle and bustle of life. Comfort, convenience and cost are usually amongst the key factors when it comes to travelling. For Khao Yai, the two main options are to either rent a car or hiring a private tour.

If you are deciding between getting a private tour or renting a car, let us breakdown the pros and cons for you.

By Taxi/Car

Taking a taxi is convenient, however, it is expensive and not recommended when travelling to Khao Yai. Once you reach there, there is no public transport and it’ll be difficult to get around. Unless you’re intending to only stay within the hotel, renting a car would be a better option.

Rental cars can be picked up directly from the airport, making it convenient for anyone who wants to head to Khao Yai immediately from the airport. You’ll also have to pay for the toll fees and make sure you don’t get into the wrong lane.

By Train

A journey to Khao Yai by train can range from 2 to 5 hours. The long travel time could be uncomfortable to some, especially those intending to travel with the elderly.

The train station does not stop directly within Khao Yai, so a taxi ride is needed to complete your journey to Khao Yai.

By Private Charter

A private charter or transfer is convenient. In terms of cost, a private charter/transfer is much more expensive than renting a car or taking the train. It is more convenient as you don’t have to do anything except to wait for your driver to turn up. Direct pickup from airport is available as well.

Transport Within Khao Yai

Between a rental car and a private tour, here are the pros and cons:

Rental Car

Pros

You are your own driver and own tour guide. You are in charge of your own schedule.

Renting a car for a day can start as low as $70 a day. If you are renting a 5-seater, this means you spend less than $20 per pax if you’re a family of 4.

A popular option for car rentals is Hertz.

Cons

Newer drivers may have some issues when it comes to driving on foreign roads.

Pros

This means you don’t need to worry about paying toll fees, searching for parking and other miscellaneous stuff. Simply inform your driver where you wish to go, and he’ll bring you there.

Simply pay for the entrance fee and your own meals.

Travelling with a private tour/driver is more comfortable as no driving is involved for you and your friends/family members. Simply enjoy the ride and sceneries along the way.

Cons

Sometimes, the drivers don’t speak very good English and communication can be slightly challenging. However, with the aid of technology, this is easy to overcome. For those who wish, some private tours have the option of a tag-along guide.

Private tours are way more expensive when compared to rental cars.

Overall

We would recommend Private Tours for family trips. Although it is on the expensive side, convenience is an important factor when travelling with the elderly or kids. Rental cars are a good option for friends going on a trip.
